To The Best Friend Who Became Family

Dear Asshole,

I feel that you are set into people’s lives on purpose. Once in a while, I think about how I got so fortunate and what I have done to deserve a best friend like you. People have come and gone out of my life, however, you never left. Your friendship is one of the best gifts I have ever received.

I haven’t told you this before but I’ve been asked a lot of times “who’s the hottie in your Snapchat story” after we hang out. Seriously, it’s crazy.

With all the enormous and seemingly small things, not a day passes by where I don’t think, “wow, I can hardly wait to tell you about it”, because no matter what it is, I want you to be the one to share it with. Even if it’s me stumbling over nothing, I still feel the need for you to listen, and you’re going to smile and laugh and maybe even tell me how stupid I am, but it’s alright, as long as you’re there to share the memory with me, it is all alright.

You trusted in me when I didn’t have faith in myself. You adored me when I was difficult to love. You listened to me when I didn’t have a voice, and let me cry in your arms when I was broken. But, in particular, you never abandoned me. That is special.

With you, it’s never an issue of what terms we’re on. We appear to simply get where we left off each time. We laugh as if time and separation haven’t isolated both of us. I cherish you like family. I esteem you more than anybody, even if I don’t convey it.

I love that we can go months without talking, but if I shoot you a text, you reply within minutes. As we grow up, people allow time and distance to act as a barrier and an excuse for relationships ending and failing.

But ours hasn’t. And I don’t think it ever will. Thank you for that.

Happy Friendship’s Day
